Capturing
“Painting begins with discovery.”
On the side of the road in Ketchum, Idaho flows the Big Wood River. Stunning and right there! Late in the day as the sun marched down the sky in the west, I raced to stop and capture what I could from this vantage point. The golden light filtering through the trees onto the river, especially lighting up the distance, captivated me. Back in my studio I selected one of the photos from this session to paint. The finished painting is called, Big Wood River, Ketchum.

“The studio is my lab. It is where I get to explore the true nature of my subject.”
I have painted in garages, basements, kitchens and very small rooms. The studio I work in now allows me to work on several paintings at once. It is nice to be able to flow between different projects, depending on drying times, creative inspiration and deadlines. They all start with a sketch done in raw umber and progress from there.
